Get Window Media Player plugin work with all installed Firefox versions

As what a couple of you have probably already noticed, the official “Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin” does only work with one of your installed Firefox instances. If you have installed multiple versions in parallel or running nightly builds, it wont work. Before you are able to watch embedded wmv content, the installed library file “np-mswmp.dll” has to be copied to the plugins folder of the appropriate Firefox installation. While doing QA and having the need to download and running nightly builds of Shiretoko or Minefiled, it requires you to do this steps again and again. So is a simpler solution out there to solve this issue? I say, Yes!

There are only two steps necessary to see the plugin appear in each Firefox installation. It’s not magic but a simple registry hack, which let the plugin be shared. I’ve no idea why Microsoft hasn’t already done that for this plugin. They are still aware in using this way, e.g. for “Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in“. I’ll get in contact with Microsoft and hopefully it can be solved in the near future.

But lets return to the instruction how to get it working. Just follow those steps:

The Window Media Player will be installed to “c:\Program Files\Windows Media Player”. So lets re-use this location. Create a sub-folder called “Plugin” and copy the library “np-mswmp.dll” over there.
Go to bug 421820 and download the registry hack.
If the installation folder of the Windows Media Player application differs from the one in step 1, you have to update the path inside the registry file before applying the file.
Double click the reg file to add the entries to your registry.

That’s all. Now each installed version of Firefox should be able to use the plugin to show embedded WMV content. At least you have to restart the browser, when it is already open. To make sure it has been recognized correctly open the Add-ons manager and click the plugins tab. The plugin has to be listed now.

Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 and mscorcfg.msc

Lately I had to configure the code access security for the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 on several clients. While on computers with the Software Development Kit (SDK) Version installed it’s not a problem, but you will have trouble with the Redistributable Version. The mscorcfg.msc applet which can be used to configure all parts of the .net framework isn’t included anymore in the latter one. Thanks Microsoft. Do I have to download the SDK version now which has a size of 354MB to only set some configuration settings?

After searching a while I was able to find a nice solution. The way I like is to create a deployment MSI package which included all the changes and can be deployed over the network in any way you want. It makes it necessary to download the SDK once but I need that in any way.

Firefox 3 will be available soon…

Some hours ago Mozilla has advertised the release date for Firefox 3! So this wonderful piece of software will be official available on June 17th, 2008. Amazing work was done during the last three years which result in a huge list (approx. 15.000 of them) of new features and improvements. Deb Richardson has written a field guide for Firefox 3 which describes the most impressive ones in detail.

Anyone who is interested in Firefox 3 should also pledge to download Firefox 3 by June 18th. It will help Mozilla in trying to set a world record for the most software downloads within 24 hours. Read more about the Download Day 2008.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.3 released

Last Friday Adobe released the third update of its Lightroom software. It’s free again for all registered users. Downloads are available for Mac OS X and Windows.

With Lightroom 1.3 a bunch of known bugs were fixed. Photoshopservices gives a good overview about most of them. There is also a brand new Export dialog available. Under the hood it will offer a fantastic new feature. From now on developers can create export plug-ins which could export images directly to Flickr, Picasa, FTP hosts, or whatever you want. There is a first Export SDK release on Adobe Labs available. Let’s see what developers will spread around.

For myself the auto-write XMP performance speed-up fix comes a bit too late now. I enabled that preference already last week and did a sync for all of my pictures taken since 2003. While it was working I wasn’t able to do anything on my macbook for around two hours due to the high cpu load. And that’s on a dual core!

With the latest fixes to have a better support for Leopard I’m ready to run an upgrade in the next time. I’m really anxious!

Videotutorial für Lightroom

Für die ersten Schritte in Lightroom stellte Galileo Design ein kostenloses Videotutorial online zur Verfügung. Mit 2:42h Spielzeit beleuchtet es alle wichtigen Elemente, um mit Lightroom effizient zu arbeiten und auch entsprechende Ergebnisse zu erhalten.

Während im Shop von Adobe der Preis von Lightroom schon auf 296 EUR gesetzt wurde, ist das Software-Paket für Windows und Mac OS X bei Amazon noch für 186 EUR zu bekommen. Keine Ahnung, wann auch hier eine Preisanhebung stattfindet. Wer schnell ist, erhält es noch zum Einführungspreis.

Total Commander 7.0 erschienen

Seit gestern ist der neue Total Commander 7.0 für Windows nun offiziell freigegeben. Nach der Installation fällt sofort die überarbeitete Benutzeroberfläche auf. Flache Schaltflächen und diverse neue Icons werten endlich die Optik auf. Aber auch sonst hat sich einiges getan, denn diverse neue Funktionen wurden integriert – ein Upgrade, das sich wirklich lohnt!

Mozilla Thunderbird 2

Mozilla wird in den nächsten Stunden offiziell den neuen Thunderbird 2 veröffentlichen. Momentan werden noch die letzten Bugs auf den Webseiten behoben und die Spiegelserver haben Zeit, die Downloadpakete zu synchronisieren. Aber dann ist es soweit. Die Arbeit von einem Jahr und drei Monaten seit der Veröffentlichung von Thunderbird 1.5 hat sich gelohnt. Es sind jede Menge neuer Funktionen enthalten und etliche Bugs gefixed. Alle Änderungen sind in den Versionshinweisen zu lesen.

Wieviel Zeit wirklich benötigt wird, um die Veröffentlichung einer neuen Version vorzubereiten, habe ich dieses Mal auch wieder gespürt. Meine eigene Arbeit spielte sich dabei aber nur in der Koordination und Übersetzung der deutschen Thunderbird-Seiten auf Mozilla-Europe und den ersten offiziellen deutschen Versionshinweisen ab. Hiermit auch ein Danke an die Helfer und Alexander Ihrig für das Review. Glücklicherweise konnte ich gleich viel von den Versionshinweisen für Firefox 2 kopieren, die Abdulkadir Topal und ich kurz davor zusammen übersetzt haben. Auch an dich ein Danke! Nie zuvor habe ich wirklich so oft den deutschen Firefox und Thunderbird verwendet. Sie waren eine echte Hilfe, um mir möglichst schnell das entsprechende Glossar aufzubauen und bei der Installation von weiteren Sprachpaketen kleine Bugs zu entdecken. Ich denke, dass ich mich in der nächsten Zeit etwas mehr mit dem Thema l10n auseinandersetzen werde, da hier noch einiges an Arbeit notwendig ist.

Alles in Allem kann ich nur raten, sobald wie möglich auf die neue Version zu wechseln. Wann hier jedoch ein automatisches Upgrade erfolgen wird, kann ich nicht sagen. Ich hoffe nur, dass es nicht so lange dauert, wie bei Firefox 2. Da warten die Benutzer immer noch. Also am Besten die 2er Version selbst herunterladen und installieren.

Update: Auf meine Frage an Scott MacGregor, wann für die Benutzer der Version 1.5.0.x ein Upgrade auf die Version 2.0 angeboten wird, erhielt ich die relativ schnell eine Antwort. Priorität hat vorerst Firefox. Erst wenn die Benutzer von Firefox 1.5.0.x ihren Browser auf die 2.0.0.x Version aktualisiert haben, wird es auch für Thunderbird ein Upgrade auf die neue Hauptversion geben. Zeitliche Prognosen wollte er jedoch nicht geben.

Beim intensiven Stöbern im Netz zu diversen Informationen zu Mac OS X stoß ich doch immer wieder auf witzige Videos bei YouTube… Wer jemals behauptet hat, dass Microsoft bei Apples Betriebssystem Ideen gesammelt hat, wird hier eines Besseren belehrt!

Das Video auf Youtube wurde leider entfernt. Aus welchem Grund auch immer…

Ich hoffe der Tag, an dem ich meinen kleinen weißen Wunderzwerg in den Händen halten werde und selbst alles austesten kann, dauert nicht mehr lange…

Studentenversion Photoshop CS2

Der Einsatz von Adobe Photoshop für die professionelle Bildverarbeitung ist gerade für Privatpersonen mit ziemlich hohen Kosten verbunden. Mit einem Preis von über 1000,- EUR für die Standardversion können es sich die Wenigsten leisten, da die erfolgten Ausgaben wohl kaum ausgeglichen werden können. Da ist es doch interessant zu hören, dass Adobe das neue Lizenzmodell “Student Edition” in das Education Program aufgenommen hat. Somit erhalten endlich auch Schüler und Studenten die Möglichkeit, ihre Ideen kreativ zu verfolgen und sich optimal auf ihr Berufsleben vorzubereiten.

Mit einem Preis von 150,- EUR für Photoshop CS 2 bzw. äußerst preiswerten 250,- EUR für die gesamte Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium (Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, GoLive CS2, Acrobat 7.0 Professional, Version Cue CS2, Adobe Bridge und Adobe Stock Photos), die normal 2100,- EUR kostet, hat Adobe ein wahres Ei ins Nest gelegt.

Amazon bietet bereits Photoshop CS 2 für 149,- EUR (Windows 2000/XP und Mac OS X) und die Creative Suite CS 2 für 249,- EUR (Windows 2000/XP und Mac OS X) an.

Update: Die hier erwähnten Studentenversionen dürfen nach den Lizenzbestimmungen leider nur auf private Rechner installiert und keinesfalls für kommerzielle Zwecke eingesetzt werden. Weiterhin sind diese Produkte nicht upgradefähig. Heißt, bei neuen Versionen muss erneut eine Vollversion gekauft werden. Wer dem skeptisch gegenübersteht, sollte sich die Education Versionen genauer anschauen. Deren Preise sind jedoch doppelt so hoch, aber auch für kommerzielle Zwecke freigegeben und upgradefähig. Je nach Einsatzart und Notwendigkeit der neuesten Version sollte jeder für sich selbst entscheiden, welche Version besser geeignet ist.
