Phototour in the Napa Valley

During my stay the Silicon Valley I haven’t only had a great day in San Francisco but also spent a day in the famous whine region of California called Napa Valley. Together with my co-worker Marcia we were driven up those 100 miles to mainly take pictures of the blooming mustard. The day was absolutely sunny but sadly we haven’t had luck to see lot of mustard. We were a bit too late or too early. But beside that we got a lot of impressions and enjoyed taking pictures. I was a bit disappointed that you do not have a chance to get closer to some areas, you have to know that most of those properties are private and visitors aren’t allowed to enter. The only way you can follow is up to the nice little castles and chateaus to taste the local wine. Everyone recommended that tastings but there was no time for us. If you stay in that area, you shouldn’t miss to attend at least one of those tastings.

Back in San Francisco we had a bit of time to drive up the hill in the north of the Golden Gate Bridge. We got a bit higher with the car as Martijn and myself were able the day before with the bikes. You will have a wonderful view from there down to San Francisco. By taking some animal pictures we ended that Sunday with a couple of nice pictures. But see yourself:

Photo challenge – please vote for us

Some weeks ago a friend of mine pointed me to an upcoming photo challenge about image manipulation created. It has been initiated by the biggest German computer magazine c’t. My first thought was to attend this challenge but I recognized that I don’t have any great images on my box and no time to work on that. But surprisingly a friend was visiting me over those days and we had some great shots in the Saxon Switzerland.

Given those pictures Silvia made a fake image in parallel without knowing about this challenge. Once I had seen the result I pushed here to subscribe to the challenge. After some talks and further processing steps of the image we have decided to take the challenge just for fun. About 3 weeks ago the first results have been posted to the online gallery and a public survey has been started. 139 of the best pictures can be voted by everyone and our faked image is in this list too.

Surprisingly a former colleague and a friend of mine informed me today that we have made it to even show up on spiegel.de. Woot – there are only 13 images posted. So isn’t it a call that we have good chances?

17 Miles Drive

In February I got a hint from a colleague of mine to visit the Pebble Beach Resorts. This peninsula is mostly know by golfers and a place for rich people. But also has some scenic areas you can visit as tourist. There is a street routed through the whole area which is called the 17 Miles Drive.

So I picked up Marcia in the morning and we were driven to that area with my rental car. It is about 100 miles in the South from Mountain View (California). We haven’t had the best weather as all the time I have spent in California but at least there was no rain. So we were able to have a look at nearly each place. I liked the rocky beach and the greenish taint on that peninsula. See the pictures below to get an impression how does it look like.

Visting the Golden Gate Bridge

Due to my new job I had to spent a whole month in California last February. I already blogged about it shortly. It was a great experience for me. Thanks to all my colleagues who made it a wonderful stay! Mozilla rocks!

Beside the work and the bad weather I have taken one day to visit San Francisco. Together with Tobias Leingruber we checked the area around Pier 39, the Bay coast, and finally the Golden Gate Bridge. I’m impressed each time I see those bridges and have to think about how they get constructed. The bridge was the longest suspension bridge worldwide for 27 years! But it has lost its title after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York has been finished in 1964. Anyway, nearly everybody worldwide knows this bridge so it will definitely remain as one of the most famous bridges.

I really enjoyed the trip and the view you have when walking to the north point and back. So for the next time I know that I have to visit the bridge by night!

Photo Gallery updates

Ok, it’s already a while back when I have updated my photoblog the last time. The reason was that the tool I used needs a lot of manual operations until a picture is visible in the blog. I don’t have time for that and simply wanna have an easy way to publish new pictures. So my decision was to switch over to Flickr. That’s the easiest way for me to publish pictures directly from Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with the Flickr export plugin. It’s a one click action now and will definitely cause a lot more picture updates as ever before.

So enjoy my pictures in the photo gallery on my website or directly on Flickr. And yes, all the former pictures will be uploaded step by step.

New photoblog online

Starting from today my website has its own photoblog. After month of inactivity in updating my gallery with new pictures I decided to have a better and more comfortable way of publishing. To find the right tool which gives me all features I want to have wasn’t an easy job. I tried a lot of them but wasn’t satisfied at all. Thanks to Manuel who has given me the note to have a look at pixelpost. Within some days of work in modifying existing themes I found my favorite delicious theme last Thursday. Spending some hours in giving it my individual look I’m ready to give it the green light. I’ll try to post images as often as I can. Have fun in visiting my pictures and I’m interested to get some feedback from you! Cheers…

Update: Kann es sein, dass das Wort König nicht mehr draufgepasst hat? Denn das Füttern eines Zaunkönigs auf der Elektroweide könnt ich mir eher vorstellen…

Spielzeugwelten

Bereits Mitte letztes Jahr bin ich auf den finnischen Künstler Miklos Gaál aufmerksam geworden, der es mit geschicktem Einsatz von Unschärfe schafft, alltägliche Situationen auf beeindruckende Weise wie Spielzeugwelten aussehen zu lassen. Ich war schon damals von dieser Idee fasziniert und musste es jetzt selbst versuchen. Es macht wirklich Spaß, die Unschärfebereiche so zu setzen, dass ein Gefühl von minimaler Schärfentiefe wie bei der Makrofotografie entsteht. Das folgende Bild zeigt einen Sonntagsausflug auf eine Burg:

Eine weitere tolle Idee ist auch die Kopplung von kleinen Figuren und Lebensmitteln, wie auf dieser Seite zu sehen ist. Wobei ich selbst noch unsicher bin, ob es sich nicht um reale Menschen handelt, die sehr aufwendig bearbeitet worden sein. Ein Eigentest steht hier noch aus.

Brettener Peter-und-Paul-Fest 2006

Wie in den vergangenen Jahren fand auch 2006 das Brettener Peter-und-Paul-Fest am ersten Wochenende im Juli statt. Daran konnte selbst die Fußball-WM nichts ändern. Es gab ein vielfältiges Programm für die Großen und Kleinen unter uns. Der lange Festumzug am Sonntag zog dabei sicherlich jeden Besucher in den Bann und auch die verschiedensten Handwerker in den Ständen zeigten ihre Zunft auf beeindruckende Weise. Impressionen vom Sonntag sind in meiner Galerie zum Peter-und-Paul-Fest zu finden.

Karlsruhe wurde 291 Jahre alt

Am Wochenende vom 16.-18. Juni feierte Karlsruhe unter dem Motto “Mittendrin” seinen 291. Stadtgeburtstag. Neben Musik, Kunst und diversen Aktivitäten, die über alle Plätze der Innenstadt verteilt waren, gab es auch Möglichkeiten zum shoppen, flanieren und relaxen. So erhielt der Rondellplatz mit aufgeschüttetem Sand und Liegestühlen einen Beach-Bereich, wo sich jeder mit einem Cocktail in der Hand entspannen konnte. Kinderaktivitäten am Friedrichsplatz beschäftigten die Kleinen unter uns. Ein atemberaubendes Erlebnis war am Samstag Abend das Surround-Feuerwerk auf dem Stephanplatz, das mit sechs verschiedenen Abschussplätzen jeden in seinen Bann zog. Synchron zur Musik der Badischen Staatskapelle (Badisches Staatstheater) gab es ein Rundum-Feuerwerk. Ein paar Impressionen des Samstages sind in meiner Galerie zum Stadtgeburtstag zu finden.

Am Sonntag den 18.06. war zum Tribut an Carl Benz ein Oldtimerkorso durch die Innenstadt geplant. Auf dem Festplatz versammelten sich deshalb seit den Morgenstunden an die 450 verschiedene Fahrzeuge, was das somit größte bekannte Treffen ergab. Das zeigt, dass Carl Benz als ehemaliger Einwohner von Karlsruhe auch heute noch sehr stark mit der Stadt verbunden wird. Meine Bilder, die ich während des Aufstellens geschossen habe, sind in der Galerie zu finden. Die strahlende Sonne und das blinkende Chrome zogen mich magisch an, weshalb im Wesentlichen Makroaufnahmen entstanden.

Alles in Allem ein schönes Fest, das sich zum nächsten Geburtstag im kommenden Jahr mit einigen Variationen im Programm bestimmt wiederholen wird.

Wie bereits angekündigt, kann ich endlich die neue Rubrik präsentieren. Ich weiß gar nicht genau, wie oft in den letzten Monaten die Frage kam, wann denn die Galerie wieder online verfügbar sein wird. Ständig gab es nur tröstende Worte von mir. Ehrlich gesagt, hat hat es mich selbst auch nicht wirklich zufrieden gestellt. Seit längerer Zeit haben sich jede Menge neuer Bilder angesammelt, die ich gern online gestellt hätte. Leider fehlte mir ein entsprechendes Tool und immer wieder die notwendige Zeit, um es dann einzubinden…

Nach einer etwas längeren Suche im Netz bin ich dann auf ein Galerie-Script gestoßen, das zum Großteil meinen Anforderungen (keine DB, XHTML Strict 1.0) entsprach. Mit dem jetzigen Design war es die letzten Tage nun auch möglich, das Template so zu gestalten, dass es sich nahtlos in die Seite integriert. Ein paar Kleinigkeiten fehlen noch, die aber in den nächsten Tagen ausgebessert werden.

Von Seiten der Bilder gibt es im Moment nur eine einzige Galerie zu betrachten. Alle anderen bisherigen Bilder werden erneut mit Photoshop überarbeitet und nacheinander eingebunden. Somit wird sich ein regelmäßiger Besuch in den nächsten Wochen lohnen.

Jetzt kann ich nur noch sagen: Viel Spaß beim Betrachten der Galerie.
