Get Window Media Player plugin work with all installed Firefox versions

As what a couple of you have probably already noticed, the official “Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin” does only work with one of your installed Firefox instances. If you have installed multiple versions in parallel or running nightly builds, it wont work. Before you are able to watch embedded wmv content, the installed library file “np-mswmp.dll” has to be copied to the plugins folder of the appropriate Firefox installation. While doing QA and having the need to download and running nightly builds of Shiretoko or Minefiled, it requires you toContinue readingGet Window Media Player plugin work with all installed Firefox versions

Getting the list of fixes between two Firefox versions

If you are using a beta version of Firefox or even a nightly build, to help in testing brand-new features and verifying fixed bugs, it’s sometimes necessary to identify a regression. Normally you will start in narrowing down the regression range by dividing the possible time frame in smaller chunks. It will take some time but finally you will end-up with two identified builds. One build with the feature working and another one with the regression starts happening. The next step will be to get the list of patches, whichContinue readingGetting the list of fixes between two Firefox versions

First Mozilla community meeting in Germany

In the last months a lot of things were going on in Europe. Several local communities have taken the chance to held a community event in their own Country. Probably you have read something about it in the European Mozilla Community Blog hosted by Mozilla Europe. But nothing happened in Germany so far. As a German citizen I wasn’t glad about. So we have taken the chance to organize our first community meeting ever. Thanks goes to Abdulkadir Topal who managed everything to make it a terrific event. Because weContinue readingFirst Mozilla community meeting in Germany

Firefox in your country

Some days ago Mozilla put a new survey online to get feedback from their users how Firefox is used in their country. If you are living in Brasil, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Poland, Spain, or a German-speaking country please take the survey. It will only take 5-10 minutes to finish but will help Mozilla to improve the user experience and distribution of Firefox in your country.

Querying mozilla-central by date

With the switch from CVS to Mercurial the ongoing work for the next major release of Firefox 3.1 is happening in mozilla-central now. That’s why using Bonsai to query for fixes within a given time span will not work. So what’s the replacement? How can you search for checkins which caused a regression? It’s as simple as that. Since yesterday the web frontend (pushlog) supports querying by date. You can use the same date format like it was used for Bonsai or just enter “yesterday”, or “today” which will alsoContinue readingQuerying mozilla-central by date

Exploring Vancouver and Firefox Summit 2008

The next week or better days will be really exiting. As a contributor to the Mozilla project I was invited to join the Firefox Summit 2008 in Whistler, BC, Canada. Thanks for getting the chance! It’s deeply grateful. I’ll enjoy the days in listening to talks, having discussions with other community members and employees of Mozilla and just be able to see each one in real life (Steven, this time it will really happen!). Together with Abdulkadir Topal, who co-ordinates the German translation of Firefox and helped me a lotContinue readingExploring Vancouver and Firefox Summit 2008

Firefox 3 will be available soon…

Some hours ago Mozilla has advertised the release date for Firefox 3! So this wonderful piece of software will be official available on June 17th, 2008. Amazing work was done during the last three years which result in a huge list (approx. 15.000 of them) of new features and improvements. Deb Richardson has written a field guide for Firefox 3 which describes the most impressive ones in detail. Anyone who is interested in Firefox 3 should also pledge to download Firefox 3 by June 18th. It will help Mozilla inContinue readingFirefox 3 will be available soon…

Temporary folder for Firefox and Thunderbird on OS X

In February last year I bought my first MacBook with OS X 10.4 alias Tiger installed and I was happy to say “Hello” to the Apple folks. Ever since it was a bit of work and I had to learn a lot until everything worked like expected. But there is still one thing which bugs me when running Firefox or Thunderbird on a fresh OS X installation. Both applications don’t use a reasonable temporary folder. Instead files which are opened by helper applications are stored under ~/Desktop or ~/Download andContinue readingTemporary folder for Firefox and Thunderbird on OS X

My weekend at FOSDEM 2008

What an amazing weekend! Reminisce about the last two years this one was definitely the greatest one at FOSDEM. The main reason why I joined again was Mozilla. And due to there aren’t so many choices to get the opportunity to meet Mozillians, I cannot cancel such an appointment. 😉 I met a lot of interesting and crazy people, listened to mostly all talks inside the Mozilla devroom (also known as sauna) and had pulsating and valuable conversations. Mostly I enjoyed to finally met Seth Bindernagel and David Tenser. BothContinue readingMy weekend at FOSDEM 2008

No shortcut to open contextual menus on OS X?

I’m really surprised! After years of experience with different Windows and Linux versions it’s getting normal for me to open contextual menus with Shift+F10 or the special context key if a mouse is not available. But yesterday while doing some work on bug 403602 I noticed that there is nothing for OS X? What about handicapped people who aren’t able to use a mouse or even use a screen reader? How do they access the context menu? I asked several people who are still working on OS X for aContinue readingNo shortcut to open contextual menus on OS X?
